A pen to die for…!
When Conway Stewart was asked to produce a pen that would be one of the star ‘characters’ in a full-length spy movie, there was only one choice for the style of pen… the magnificent Winston! Around 20 black and gold Winstons were specially made as Conway Stewart Kingsman pens, as each Kingsman secret agent carries one. Interestingly, Michael Caine as head of Kingsman, had to have a unique pen which plays a special role towards the end of the film. You will have to watch the film to spot which Conway Stewart pen was used for this purpose.
Starring Colin Firth, Samuel L Jackson and Michael Caine, you can tell immediately that Kingsman: The Secret Service is a great film. It’s a hard hitting and very entertaining film about an international intelligence agency operating at the highest level of discretion. You can see a brief preview here.
The publicity material issued by the film-makers says the Conway Stewart Kingsman is made from ‘solid black titanium’, and is designed to ‘release 5ml of poison’. As a secret agent’s gadget, we think Q would have been very pleased with it!
However, you should take some of the publicity material with a pinch of salt. The production pens do have ‘secret’ features but are crafted from high density black acrylic with solid 18ct gold bands. One of the gold bands is engraved ‘Oxfords, not brogues’.
Why ‘Oxfords, not brogues’?
There are 3 distinctive marks which define the Conway Stewart Kingsman:
The second is an inscription on the 18ct gold ring immediately above the nib holder section. It says “Oxfords, not brogues”. On one level this is a reminder to the Kingsman ’employees’ of the way they are expected to dress. (Smart/casual doesn’t come close!) However, “Oxfords, not brogues” is also a code passed between the Kingsman agents to confirm their identity, so it does play a key part in the film.
And the third is the lever-fill mechanism which, in the film, is the switch to release the poison! In reality, it fills the pen full of ink!
A pen that oozes class: distinguished, elegant – and extremely rare!
Without doubt, the Conway Stewart Kingsman is a distinguished pen; its size means it stands out in a crowd, yet it is also extremely elegant, staying true to the style and feel of a classic vintage Conway Stewart design. The top mounted clip allows the pen to sit low in your pocket, making the Kingsman a more practical choice for everyday use, and there is a carefully balanced solid brass liner to the barrel which gives this model a weighty feel without making it too heavy for comfortable use.
Yet it is its rarity which makes the Conway Stewart Kingsman so attractive to collectors. With so few having been produced – we believe less than 40 – the 9 now available from BBP probably represent the last opportunity to add a pen with real ‘film star quality’ to your collection.
Each Conway Stewart Kingsman pen is housed in an exclusive Conway Stewart black leather presentation box which doubles as an elegant desk tray.
