What makes ‘The Best of British’? Consummate design skills? Meticulous craftsmanship? Hallmarked sterling silver, rich enamelling and a smooth-as-butter nib? Combine them all and the result, shown here, is the closest you can get to British pen perfection.

In this latest example of his exquisite craftsmanship, Henry has turned for inspiration to one of the earliest overlay examples ever made in the UK – a 1907 ‘Exhibition’ pen hand-crafted in Birmingham by a firm of silversmiths over an Onoto plunger-filler body. At that time, many silversmiths chose to make ‘exhibition’ pieces which they could use to display their talents at shows and exhibitions. The original pen was acquired by a private collector in 2013 and he was so impressed with its magnificent design and structure that he invited Henry to make a replica of it in a small limited edition.

An unquestionable pedigree

The result, shown here is a stunning tribute to British pen-making – with an unquestionable pedigree stretching back more than 100 years.

Issued in a limited edition of just 35, the 1907 ‘Exhibition’ pen is sure to be in great demand by Onoto collectors and fans of Henry’s superb craftsmanship around the world. Early reservation is advised.

Product Description

A stunning tribute to British pen-making

When it comes to a ‘special’ British fountain pen, a pen that is truly a work of art as well as a functional writing instrument, the name of Henry Simpole immediately springs to mind. Over the past 10 years, this highly talented London silversmith/designer has made his mark on the pen world with a collection of exquisite pens decorated with intricate silver overlays.

Exquisite design

Henry has captured the intricate detail of an original 1907 Exhibition Onoto in virtually every aspect of his exquisite design, including the rich, black enamelling between the filigree silver which creates a very tactile finish – the slight undulations in the enamel rising to the crest of each sterling silver strand in traditional cloisonné style.

Superb plunger-filler mechanism

Like the majority of the early Onotos, the 1907 Exhibition pen had at its heart a plunger-filling mechanism which has been much-loved ever since by pen connoisseurs all over the world. Now, the Henry Simpole 1907 Exhibition Plunger-filler features an updated plunger-filling mechanism with carbon-fibre plunger-rod, special silicone-rubber cup valves and ingenious 3-washer seals that we believe give a much longer life than the original cork seals. And of course, the plunger-filling mechanism allows for a much larger ink capacity – more than double that of a traditional cartridge or converter.

6000-year-old techniques

Each Sterling Silver overlay is made using the 6000 year-old ‘lost-wax’ process, which means that the Henry Simpole 1907 Exhibition Plunger-filler can never be mass produced. The edition has been limited to just 35 pens and as each one is made to order, you should allow up to 28 days for delivery.

Certificate of Authenticity

Each Henry Simpole 1907 Exhibition Plunger-filler comes in an elegant presentation box and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Henry, together with an 8-page booklet about his life and the ancient Egyptian techniques used to create each overlay.

‘Smooth-as-butter’ 18ct gold flexible nib

Although the 1907 original had an over-feed nib, Henry has fitted the new flexible ‘Flag’ nib in 18ct gold which although only launched in 2015 has already received worldwide praise for its flexibility and its ‘smooth-as-butter’ writing. It is available in Medium width only.

Custom nibs also available

And if you prefer to use a special nib – an italic, stub or oblique, for example – you can have the flexible Flag medium nib ground to your exact specification by one of the UK’s leading nib-masters. Just complete your requirements in the shopping cart.
