Product Description

Classic design with subtle Shakespearean connections

Classically elegant in design, the Shakespeare Pen Sterling Silver bears a full set of English hallmarks to confirm its quality and purity. English hallmarks have been used as evidence of purity of precious metals since 1300, well before Shakespeare was born.

And there’s a closer link with William Shakespeare… His father, John Shakespeare, was a well-to-do glover and whittawer in Stratford upon Avon, and made silk gloves and purses for the nobility. At that time, silk was very fashionable with the aristocracy so when it came to making a decision about the engraved pattern on the cap and barrel of the Shakespeare Pen it seemed appropriate to use a traditional engine-turned pattern known as ‘silk’ which was used by many English silversmiths in the past, but is rarely seen today.

On the end of the cap is an image of William Shakespeare which has been taken from the title page of his First Folio, published in 1623. ‘Made in England’ is also engraved on the cap top to reflect that not only is the pen made in England, but so was the world’s greatest playwright.

A black onyx gemstone is embedded near the top of the clip as it is believed to promote wisdom, intuitiveness and concentration – great qualities for any writer and innate to Shakespeare.

Writing with a Shakespeare Pen Sterling Silver

There is nothing quite like writing with a fountain pen. The ink flows from the nib in a way that aids thought and concentration. We cannot guarantee that your writings will become as famous as those of Shakespeare but owning the Shakespeare Pen Sterling Silver may inspire you to write great words of comfort, love and wisdom to your friends, family and loved ones.

Available as a fountain pen or rollerball (or both!)

Shakespeare Fountain Pen – with Union Jack Flag 18ct gold nib

Fitted with a high quality 18ct gold 2-tone nib engraved with the flag of Great Britain. There is a choice of Fine, Medium or Broad widths to suit most writing styles. If you prefer to use a special nib – an italic, stub or oblique, for example – you can have the nib ground to your exact specification by one of the UK’s leading nib-masters. Just complete your specific requirements in the ‘Custom Nib’ section above.

Shakespeare Rollerball – with internationally available high quality refills

The Shakespeare Pen Sterling Silver can also be ordered as a rollerball which is like a biro/ballpoint but has the free-flowing ink qualities of a fountain pen. Or buy a conversion kit to turn your Shakespeare Fountain Pen into a Rollerball – and vice versa – quickly and easily

If you like the idea of having a choice of rollerball one day and fountain pen the next, then you’ll love this ingenious Conversion Kit that we have developed. It comes with full instructions but it is a very simple process and gives you total flexibility. You will find full details and the chance to order in Accessories. The cost of the conversion kit is £72 / €99 / $108.

Shakespeare Lives is an exciting global programme of events and activities celebrating Shakespeare’s work on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of his death. Shakespeare Lives brings together a host of leading UK cultural organisations and artists with the British Council and the GREAT Britain campaign.

VSO – Supporting education, fighting poverty

VSO is the official charity partner of Shakespeare Lives. This partnership will use the power of Shakespeare’s anniversary year to help thousands of children in Africa and Asia get the education they deserve. Education is a direct route out of poverty, but millions of children are missing out because of a lack of properly trained teachers, or by being excluded from classrooms simply because of who they are. VSO is committed to making education accessible to every child.

Thank you

For every pen sold, a percentage is being paid to the charity VSO. What better way to celebrate William Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary than to support this charity which is committed to helping thousands of children in Africa and Asia get the education they deserve. The power of the pen has never meant so much!

Delivery

Because of the bespoke nature of all our pens – nib configurations, fitting options etc, we rarely have pens available ‘off the shelf’. As soon as we receive your order we will email you with a confirmation of your order and provide you with an estimate of the time required to assemble, configure and thoroughly test your pen. This is usually between 10 and 14 days, although in busy periods it could be up to 28 days.

Once your pen has passed quality control it will be carefully secured in its presentation box before being packed for despatch.

All our pens are despatched using Royal Mail and as soon as we have handed it over to Royal Mail, we will email you with a despatch confirmation. This email also provides you with a tracking number which will enable you to track your parcel.

UK Deliveries

For delivery to UK addresses we use the Special Delivery service which means your pen will be delivered within 24 hours, usually before 1pm, on the day following despatch. We advise you by email when your pen has been handed over to Royal Mail and provide tracking information so you can trace the whereabouts of your pen on the Royal Mail tracking website: https://www.royalmail.com/track-your-item . You will need to sign for your parcel on receipt.

International Deliveries

For delivery to overseas addresses we use Royal Mail’s International Signed For service which means you will need to sign for the parcel to confirm receipt. We advise you by email when your pen has been handed over to Royal Mail and provide tracking information so you can trace the whereabouts of your pen on the Royal Mail tracking website: https://www.royalmail.com/track-your-item. Once the parcel arrives in your country, your local postal service takes over responsibility for delivery, although you can still use Royal Mail’s ‘Track and Trace’ system. In some countries, you can use the Royal Mail tracking number we provide on your local postal service website. For example you can use Royal Mail Tracking numbers on the USPS website to track your parcel in the USA. In other countries you will need to check with your local postal service to see if they can track international parcels in this way.

If you have any doubts or reservations about the security of your national parcel delivery service, you can always ask for your pen to be delivered by one of the internationally recognised courier companies (Fedex, UPS etc). Just make a note when you order and we will be in touch regarding any additional charges for international courier delivery.

Fill method

Each Shakespeare Pen has a dual filling system. It is fitted with a converter (reservoir) which allows you to draw ink from a bottle or alternatively, you may remove the converter and use standard European ink cartridges. We will include 2 cartridges with your pen so you can start to use it immediately. If you prefer to use bottled ink, we recommend our own range of high quality ink, made in England and available in a range of colours.
